During the early 1970's there was a need for some form of alerter for fire
brigades to take the place of alarm bells and sirens to alert retained
firefighters of a call out.
Given the success of the police use of personal radio a solution based on radio
equipment was sought and fire brigade alerters were the result.
These initially operated on a frequency of 147.8Mhz using audio tones and later
were pocsag pagers.
